Architecture & Environment
Reflection
This module taught me so much in a personal and professional sense. It forced me to consider the aspects of architectural work that cater more toward protecting and utilizing the environment to bring the design to life. The human factor was one thing that was built into this module so well. Out of all the classes I’ve taken so far, it was this module that solidified the ideals of having to consider designing for human comfort and the wellbeing of those we design for, which I can now see is such an integral part of the work and responsibility of an Architect.

On top of that, this module deepened and developed my understanding of architectural concepts like acoustics, Daylighting, passive design, Thermal comfort, ventilation, and how to design artificial lighting spaces. It helped me create an awareness and understanding of how to design buildings that cater and respond to local climatic conditions that reduce the energy load, integral knowledge to the future of the architecture industry, and as we try and become a more sustainable community.
I learned the importance of having and achieving comfortable building designs by integrating passive design during the initial stages of the design development and narrative.
To conclude my reflection, I feel like I have taken so much away from this module and I’ve had the privilege to learn and absorb information that will better help serve the future clients that I design for. It is, at the end of the day, our responsibility to make the most of what we have material and climate-wise and by the use of ideas like these and integrating passive design, it is more possible than ever before to create and design sustainably. I’ve advanced my knowledge of the human condition and how we function and live within our spaces, and isn’t that one of the biggest goals of any architect? I feel thankful enough to have learned through this module, that our role, our responsibility as an architect is to utilize the space we’re given, to create something different entirely.
