Building construction and materials
Reflection

Throughout the duration of the module on building construction and materials in architecture, my perspective on the subject underwent a significant transformation. The module not only provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the various elements that contribute to constructing remarkable structures but also deepened my appreciation for the intricate relationship between design and functionality.

Initially, I approached architecture with a primarily aesthetic lens, focusing on the visual aspects of buildings rather than the technical aspects of their construction. However, as I delved into the module, I quickly realized the fundamental role that building materials play in shaping the final outcome of any architectural project.

One of the key takeaways from the module was the impact of material selection on the structural integrity and sustainability of buildings. I gained a newfound appreciation for the importance of choosing appropriate materials that can withstand environmental forces, enhance energy efficiency, and reduce the overall environmental footprint. Learning about the properties and characteristics of different materials, such as concrete, steel, and timber, opened my eyes to the diverse range of options available to architects and the significance of making informed choices.

Furthermore, the module highlighted the significance of construction techniques and methodologies in ensuring the durability and safety of buildings. I developed a deeper understanding of the construction process, from foundation to finishing touches, and the importance of adhering to industry standards and regulations. It became clear to me that successful architecture encompasses not only innovative design concepts but also a thorough understanding of construction principles.

Moreover, the module expanded my perspective by exploring advancements in building materials and construction technologies. I learned about sustainable practices such as using recycled materials, employing energy-efficient systems, and implementing smart building technologies. This knowledge opened up new possibilities for me as a future architect, encouraging me to integrate environmentally conscious approaches into my designs.

In conclusion, the module on building construction and materials in architecture has been transformative in shaping my perspective on the subject. It has broadened my understanding of the intricate relationship between design and construction, emphasizing the importance of material selection, construction techniques, and sustainability. Armed with this newfound knowledge, I feel more equipped to tackle the challenges of creating aesthetically pleasing, functional, and environmentally responsible architectural designs.
